Road Closure:
Mount Blue Sky is currently closed:
July 2025-Spring 2026

The Mount Blue Sky Highway project has restarted work for the 2025 season with the contracted team, Siete, Inc. mobilizing their equipment. The road will be closed to vehicles, bikes and pedestrians from the gate near the Forest Service welcome station to the summit parking area through the 2025 season. Hiking trails will remain open.

Work that was completed on the project in the 2024 season included:

  • Removal of existing asphalt

  • Repaired the subgrade

  • Removal and replacement of culverts

  • Drainage improvements were completed

  • Granular fill completed and topped with road millings

  • Headwalls installed

  • Rock embankment work was started and will continue into this season

The two-season project started in the fall of 2024 and worked into the early part of November before moving into a winter shutdown. When completed, the highway will reopen in the spring of 2026. The project reconstructs 0.7 miles of Colorado State Highway (SH) 5 in Clear Creek County, Colorado. The project is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Denver in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest. SH 5 is designated a Scenic Byway and provides access to the top of Mount Blue Sky, which is the highest paved road in the United States.

The project area is adjacent to Summit Lake Park located at 13,000 feet above sea level. The area receives on average 292 inches of snowfall per year with temperatures ranging from 65 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. The project traverses between United States Forest Service and Denver

Mountain Parks Lands.
